In December 2009, Seagreen Wind Energy Limited, a joint venture partnership between SSE and Fluor, was awarded by The Crown Estate the exclusive development rights for the Firth of Forth Zone of the UK's Round 3 offshore wind farm development programme.

The Zone is located approximated 25km east of Fife and covers an area of 2,852km² in the outer Firth of Forth. The zone has a potential installed capacity of 3.5GW which could almost double Scotland’s entire existing renewables capacity.

Over the next few years, Seagreen will be working closely with The Crown Estate to engage with stakeholders and undertake site-specific surveys and assessments required for consent applications of a number of projects in the Zone. It is planned to develop the Zone in three phases with Phase 1 in the northern area of the Zone being developed first and Phases 2 and 3 in the centre and southern areas following.
